 The World’s Biggest Software Company-Microsoft-

Almost no one in the world is unaware of Microsoft, but have you ever considered why Microsoft is so successful?

Let's just start from the beginning.

Bill Gates and Paul G. Allen, two Seattle high school classmates, adapted BASIC, a famous mainframe computer programming language, for use on an early personal computer (PC), in 1975. Shortly afterward, they derived (Microsoft) from the words microcomputer and software.

In 1980, IBM Corporation commissioned Microsoft to create an operating system for its first personal computer, the IBM PC, which was released in 1981 with MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System).

It had sold over 100 million copies of the software by the early 1990s and had vanquished other operating systems such as CP/M, which it had superseded in the early 1980s.

With Windows, Microsoft strengthened its stronghold in the operating system market. By 1993, Windows 3.0 and later versions were selling one million copies per month, and Microsoft's operating system was installed on roughly 90% of the world's PCs. In 1995, the firm developed Windows 95, which completely merged MS-DOS with Windows for the first time and essentially equaled Apple Computer's Mac OS in terms of simplicity of use.

By the mid-1990s, it had grown to become one of America's most influential and profitable corporations.

It consistently made 25 cents on every dollar of sales, an incredible record. However, its quick expansion engendered animosity and rivalry among competitors, some of whom claimed that its activities violated anti-unfair competition statutes in the United States.

Microsoft's entry into the gaming industry

In 2001, Microsoft introduced the Xbox, an electronic game device that swiftly rose to the second position in the video game industry. In 2002, it also introduced Xbox Live, a broadband gaming network for its consoles. and, in 2005, the Xbox 360, a more powerful game device, was introduced. Microsoft struggled to produce regular profits from their system in a fiercely competitive market where the Xbox faced stiff competition from the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation. For example, in 2009, in order to gain market share, Microsoft reduced the price of the Xbox 360 Elite by up to 25%. The shift was a success; the Xbox 360 was the most popular game system in American households. However, the price decrease resulted in a 6% drop in sales for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division. The Xbox 360 was superseded in 2013 by the Xbox One, which was replaced in 2020 by the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Microsoft has promoted cloud gaming, in which games are streamed onto devices from business data centers but require a high-speed internet connection.

Two years after buying ZeniMax Media and scooping up games like The Elder Scrolls and Starfield, Microsoft has announced its plans to purchase Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. The deal, which is expected to close in July 2023, will be one of the largest in gaming history. Microsoft will control the developers of even more famous games, such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Candy Crush.

Microsoft said that the Activision acquisition will provide foundational elements for the metaverse or virtual online environments where people may work, play, and interact. Its other metaverse efforts are coming together; the mixed reality headset HoloLens 2 has been released. Some argue that the world-building game Minecraft, which Microsoft purchased in 2015, provides a glimpse into the Metaverse.

The acquisition, most notably, strengthens Microsoft's cloud gaming service, Xbox Game Pass, which currently has 25 million subscribers. When Activision games are added to Game Pass, the firm will get access to 400 million active monthly gamers from 190 countries. Game Pass is available for Android smartphones and tablets.

Microsoft is now the world's third-largest gaming corporation in terms of revenue, after China's Tencent and Japan's Sony. Microsoft attracts a significant audience in mobile gaming, where it now has a higher presence.
